About Eating Disorders

Out of my depth

Not really quite sure what to expect here. I guess I'm looking for more information and to understand a little bit more about myself. Someone told me I should contact first steps so here I am. Taking my first steps. I'm over weight and purge regularly and I'm tired of not understanding my own body and mind. This has been happening for years on and off and I tend to go through different bouts of eating problems. I would like some support although I don't know what I'm looking for or what to expect I guess I'm hoping someone can just point me in the right direction.

Treatment options

The National Institute for Clinical Excellence (called NICE for short) has issued information to the NHS on eating disorders. The aim of this is to improve care and treatment.  If you think the treatment or care that you receive (or someone you care for receives) does not match the treatment or care described in the NICE guidelines you should discuss your concerns with the healthcare professional involved in your care, your GP, advocate or members of your healthcare team.

Stigma

Stigma is a big threat to the recovery of persons with eating disorders.  Chances are you know someone who has or has had a mental health problem like an eating disorder, anxiety, depression, drug and alcohol misuse, dementia they can affect anyone and can cause more suffering and disability than any other type of health problem.

Prevention

  • Examine your beliefs and prejudices about weight and appearance. Develop and communicate acceptance and respect for yourself and other people, regardless of weight. This will reduce some of the pressure people may feel to change their bodies.
  • Notice and draw self-esteem from your positive qualities, not only from the way you look.
  • Actively challenge cultural, media, peer, and social pressures to lose weight.

What are eating disorders?

Anyone can get an eating disorder. Eating disorders are difficult and painful illnesses to live with, but sufferers can still find it hard to ‘choose recovery’. The disorder has often developed as a way of ‘coping’ with problems and stress. To beat the illness, you need to learn new and positive ways of dealing with difficult issues in your life.

Causes of eating disorders
